Design Challenge - Lakes & Mountains

04 August 2016 08:30

Back to a challenge this month, and the theme is Lakes & Mountains.  Let's keep to a holiday theme for a bit longer!  You can use photos, go for a more geometric interpretation, just use appropriate colours - what does the theme suggest to you?

Following on from our facebook conversation and a previous conversation, we'll try things slightly differently this month, so do check the Full Details section!  When your design is ready, you can post it straight onto our FB page.  However, you will need to repeat your design first, otherwise we'll only see one tile.  Upload it to the web site, as usual, and email me with your account name and the title of your design.  Also tell me whether you've uploaded it to FB or whether I need to do that.  If you can't deal with the repeat, don't worry, just tell me when you email and I'll do it as before.

As this is a challenge rather than a competition, and as any designs uploaded by the designer will show the account name, I thought it would be a good idea to include the name of the designer alongside the design.  I'll use proper names unless you ask me either not to put a name at all, or to use a business name.

We'll display your designs at the fat quarter size, as usual, on FB, but I'll include swatch sizes on the blog.  If you're uploading your own design to FB, please show it as a fat quarter.

If you would like to tell us a bit about the inspiration behind your design, please feel free, either to include it on FB, or to tell me when you email.  It's probably best to keep it fairly short on FB, maybe slightly longer for the blog - but no 1000-word essays, please!!

FULL  DETAILS:

Please upload your challenge designs to your account on our website.  If you haven’t already got an account, it’s simple to set up.  You just need an email address, password and name, which can be your own name, a nickname or a business name.  (You will be prompted to log in or create an account when you try to save your design.)  Then email me at admin@printmepretty.co.uk, to tell me the name of your account and design.  (So I can find the right one!)  You may also upload your design to our Facebook page.  I will put any not already uploaded onto Facebook after the closing date.  We may select one or two to put into our competition winners slot.  In case you're wondering about the order in which designs are listed on Facebook, the first to arrive in my inbox goes at the top, with the rest listed in the order in which they are sent in.

So, the challenge is:  Create a design suitable for printing on fabric based on 'Lakes & Mountains'.

Technical matters:

Your design should be at a resolution of at least 150 dpi, but not more than 300, using RGB colour space.

When it comes to printing, the repeat options are:  Straight, Centre, Half-drop, Half-brick and Mirror.  Once you’ve uploaded your design to our website, you can play around with the repeats to see which one will look best.  For pictures of what the different repeats look like, check this blog post.

To take part:

Upload your design onto our website by Tuesday, August 16th, giving it a title.  Email me at admin@printmepretty.co.uk, telling me the title of your design and the name of your account.  You can also say a little about the inspiration behind your design, if you wish.

The closing date for receiving designs is midnight on Tuesday, August 16th, after which designs will be displayed (at the fat quarter size) on Facebook and on the blog.  Any designs uploaded to Facebook after the closing date may be removed.

By entering, you agree to our challenge terms and conditions.

You may only submit one entry, which must be your own work and based on the theme Lakes and Mountains. ‘Your own work’ means any form of original art work, photography, etc which you have produced. Your design should not have been entered in one of our previous competitions.

All entries will be displayed, unless we feel that the subject matter is inappropriate.  Copyright will remain with you, but by entering the challenge, you give us the right to use your design in any way we wish on our web site and social media, for advertising purposes.

All designs entered into the challenge will be made public on our web site without charge and will be available for sale.   The designer will be paid £2 per metre commission on any sales of the design.

Happy designing!
