Spotting Patterns

14 December 2017 09:00

I hope you enjoyed our recent Instagram Pattern Challenge, whether you posted a 'found' pattern or just looked at the patterns others had found.

Some of the patterns we found are deliberate ones - beautifully decorated walls and ceilings, architectural features and so on.

But in many ways the most fun patterns are the 'accidental' ones.  The ones created by shadows, the alignment of a number of features, leaves or flower stalks against the sky.  Sometimes it can be something quite ordinary, seen in a particular way.

This type of pattern is the hardest to spot 'to order', for a challenge.  You see them when you see them.  But the idea of the challenge was at least partly to encourage you to keep looking.  Look up, look down , look around, wherever you are.  You never know when you're going to spot the next wonderful pattern to inspire your designing.

You can see all the patterns that were uploaded on Instagram, at #pmppatterns.  You can use this hashtag any time you find an inspiring pattern.  You can also see the patterns we found last year when we ran a similar challenge, both on Instagram and on the blog under Instagram Pattern Challenge Round-up.

Photographers include pollydextrous, laurawright_artist and ruthisobella.  Thanks for taking part, ladies.
